2009 annual report

20 Jan
Printer-friendly version

I meant to post this earlier but was hit with a nasty cold bug that clobbered me - the good news was my hair wasn't infected. The bad news was nearly everything else was.

This is a brief retrospective of what FOSSLC did in 2009, and a look forward to 2010.

Our original goals for 2009 were:

  • Set up and move to the new new web site (http://fosslc.org)
  • 50,000 video views
  • Incorporate in North America, and later we added the goal for fosslc.de in Germany.
  • Hold 12 events... we held 14 events on 3 continents.
  • Summercamp2009 conference. It went from 18 talks in 2008, to 47 talks in 2009.
  • Raise $100K, well... this was a disaster given the economy. We did raise approximately $30K to cover expenses.

As you can see, we clearly met all of the goals except the fund-raising goal. Rumour has it, we're not alone... 2009 was a grim year for finding money.

We would especially like to thank the sponsors that have been so good to us even in tough times. Your support has been crucial to us bringing useful and interesting educational material to a lot of people.

Beyond our original goals, we did a bunch of extras:

  • We appreciate the partnerships with PGCon, OSGeo/FOSS4G, the Eclipse Foundation, and FSOSS to record these great open source conferences and events. We look forward to working with them again in 2010.
  • The open source license debate in August. We had a great response to the event and videos.
  • Web traffic has been excellent. We only started tracking in March, it's mid-December now yet we've had over 240,880 unique visitors to the site.
  • We created the job board which contains posting for jobs with open source skills or at open source companies.
  • We now have our own video recording software called Freeseer which has made a dramatic improvement in cost of recording events and supporting open standards.

Our 2010 Goals:

  • teleconference facility based on Asterisk to better enable our members to communicate and coordinate
  • roll out our first course offering... an introductory programming course using only open source technology
  • create a local chapter agreement to formalize what it takes to create a chapter and their (light weight) obligations
  • install a new board of directors, and advisors
  • establish a new set of bylaws to replace the bare bones one we put in place during incorporation
  • raise at least $30K
  • add another 50K video views
  • establish at least 3 new video correspondents (with their own capture station)

More on these goals later. Thank you kindly for your interest and support.
