About this time last year, I made time to sit down and blog about trends I was seeing in the job market pertaining to open source skills. This is an update after 1 year. What are the trends in the job industry pertaining to open source? Evidence indicates there are good jobs out there if you know where to look.

Where are the open source jobs? was written for my students mainly. In certain environments it is quite easy to get the impression that computers == Microsoft (though = would fit as well I suppose). This impression is not healthy. As I've touched on in the past, the world is not strictly open our closed  - it's a pragmatic balance of both. Step into any datacentre and you're sure to find Linux, Apache, MySQL or PostgreSQL, and more. Peek over the shoulder of developers and you're just as likely to see Eclipse and Java as Visual Studio and .NET. Thus I am glad that the blog got the visibility I was hoping it would.

A quick plug for our own job listing. It's free so check it out.

So here we go... what do things look like in 2010:

Operating systems

Clearly the future is Windows and Linux. Relative growth favours Linux, while the massive Microsoft ecosystem still offers much opportunity to people who choose that platform.

Database

Relative growth favours the open source databases by a wide margin, particularly MySQL and Postgres. A look at the absolute numbers of opportunities and it's clear that Oracle, IBM, and Microsoft still influence the industry.

Languages

Ruby and Python continue to show hot growth. Java is clearly the runaway incumbent.

Content Management

Sharepoint experts clearly have opportunities in an absolute sense. However Drupal and Joomla are seeing rapid growth. Drupal in particular is seeing adoption on high profile sites. Thus prompting  Dave Rosenberg to say Need a job? Learn Drupal.
