Build your business on open source

One thing I find particularly exciting about open source software is the fact it reduces the barrier to entry to start-ups. Today, it is viable to get great software with no initial license cost. This includes software providing office automation, customer relations management, enterprise resource planning, database, content management, business intelligence, operating system, and other functionality. Contested discussions of long term TCO aside, saving licensing costs up front is a big deal to cash starved start ups.

Google recommends Firefox or Chrome for gmail

According to a posting on Google's gmail website, Firefox or Google's Chrome browser run gmail an average of twice as fast as Microsoft's Internet Explorer. As a result, Google is advocating using them instead of IE.

Denver, one of our community members rightly called me on it wondering what a job posting for a non-standard technology was doing on an open source mailing list. Zune screen of death

Though I haven't seen one with my own eyes, I've been reading about an unfortunate story reporting Zune 30GB units having problems.

A quote from Microsoft's Zune website:
"Customers using the Zune 30 might experience problems starting their players. We’re aware of the problem and are working to correct it. The Zune Social might be slow or inaccessible. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your patience!"
